What is Future City? Future City is a hands-on, cross-curricular educational program that brings STEM to life for students in Grades 6 through 8–with over 45,000 students participating annually in the US, Canada, China, Egypt, and Nigeria. Using the Engineering Design Process (EDP) and project management skills, students showcase their solutions to a citywide sustainability issue. Visit the Future City website for more information.
This year’s theme, Above the Current, challenged students to design a floating city that kept its citizens safe and healthy. Elements to be considered included designing water treatment and distribution systems, incorporating Smart Grid technologies to deliver electricity safely and efficiently, utilizing nuclear science and technology in an environmentally conscious way, and demonstrating how their cities could withstand and adapt to natural disasters. The competition requires teams to write city description essays, design two-dimensional city maps, and construct models using recyclable materials.

Congratulations to all of our amazing teams!
