July 31, 2024Since 2014, Evergreen Academy in Bothell, WA has been making changes around their campus to become more sustainable and reduce waste. The school’s Green Team began in 2014, the same year the school’s garden was built. In 2021 the school began working towards King County’s Green School program. During the 2023-24 school year, the campus added two additional composters, as well as compost buckets for each classroom. The student council works in conjunction with the Green Team to collect the classroom compost twice a week and move it into the larger composters in the school garden.
Our goal is to create a more sustainable school garden, as well as reduce the amount of waste at our school and in our greater community.
– Amy Morey, Principal
In addition to these initiatives, the first grade team supports these efforts through the Reduce Waste Challenge every May. Each day, the first graders measure how much trash each classroom has at the end of the school day. This is graphed throughout the week in hopes of motivating classrooms to reduce their waste. The room with the least amount of waste gets to throw water balloons at the first grade teachers at Field Day!
Other Green Achievements from Evergreen Academy include:
Certified Wildlife Habitat
The Evergreen Academy grounds are a Certified Wildlife Habitat! With conscientious planning, landscaping and sustainable gardening, the National Wildlife Federation recognizes the establishment and maintenance of our official wildlife habitat. This property provides the four basic habitat elements needed for wildlife to thrive: food, water, cover, and places to raise young.
1st Grade Garden is a certified Pollinator Habitat
2nd Grade Garden is a certified Butterfly Habitat
Congratulations to Evergreen Academy on achieving Level 1 Green School recognition in King’s County and on these innovative initiatives to reduce waste and increase sustainability!
